- Title
JOHN A. RYAN: AN EARLY REVISIONIST?
- Authors
Gaillardetz, Richard A.
- Abstract
John A. Ryan has been described as one of three theologians of enduring significance in the American Catholic church. Yet at the same time his work has been criticized for a lack of theological sophistication. The present essay argues against the latter view, maintaining that Ryan's contributions in ethical methodology aided the development of the then undeveloped field of social ethics, and that in particular, Ryan's distinctive use of Catholic natural law tradition anticipated at key points the work of a later generation of Catholic moral theologians.
