- Abstract
The method of retrospective numerical modeling, based on digital 3D-models of the relief and two-dimensional shallow-water equations, was applied to the Lower Don valley to show that the level regime of the river during high floods has changed considerably in the recent 100 years. This is due to the extensive economic development of Lower Don floodplain, the construction of roads (which block the floodplain by high embankments), flood protection structures, fish farms, etc. A conclusion is made that the curves relating water discharges and levels at gages that are now in use in Roshydromet, should be corrected within the range of water discharges extending to the floodplain.
