- Abstract
Introduction. Congenital heart defects are the main cause of infant mortality when compared to other malformations. Among mayor congenital abnormalities, cardiac defects (up to 28%) are the most frequent. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the use of pulse oximetry as a potential tool for early detection of critical heart anomalies. Material and Methods. With an observational and prospective study we obtained measurements of pre and postductal saturation. Demographic data was collected from neonates admitted to maternal cohabitation area at Hospital Civil de Guadalajara Fray Antonio Alcalde from March 1 to July 1, 2015 with the aim to detect critical cardiac defects. Results. The sample included 260 newborns, 127 females and 133 males. Epidemiologic profile included gestational age (GA) (X=39+1.4 GA), weight (X= 49.2+1.9 cm), vaginal delivery 144 (55.4%) and cesarean 116 (44.6%), pre and postductal pulse oximetry (X=96% SD 1.7-1.8). Conclusions. All of the newborns included in this sample were considered as healthy and with no evidence of critical heart abnormalities. We suggest an increase in the sample number in order to detect patients with probabilities of having a congenital heart disease. This way specificity and sensibility of pulse oximetry may be evaluated as a diagnostic test used in routine screening. Pulse oximetry proved to be trustworthy, feasible and cost effective.
