The author offers insights on a study published within the issue which focused on the language policy for non-native English language-speaking international teaching assistants (ITA) at the University of Minnesota. Topics discussed include the English language proficiency tests that universities tend to administer to ITA, the assessment of the university teaching competence of concerned ITA, and the costs associated with extending the language proficiency assessment policy to all teachers.
