- Abstract
In palliative medicine sedation therapy (also called palliative sedation) is considered the ultimate way to approach and control symptoms of extreme intensity, causing unbearable suffering which do not respond to conventional treatments. Such symptoms appear frequently in patients in the last phase of life. Palliative sedation means that drugs with sedative effects are given, in doses and combinations that reduce or abolish the consciousness of a (terminal) patient. Precise monitoring is essential to avoid intolerable adverse effects on the one hand and unnecessary suffering on the other hand. Such treatment has to be ethically acceptable for the patient, family and professionals involved in this care process. This article describes indications, patient management, medication and algorithms used to perform this technique in patients experiencing extreme suffering in the last phase of life.
