- Abstract
Translator and interpreter training at undergraduate level in Turkey goes back almost 40 years. In this process, which started with the student admission of two departments, the number of departments of translation has approached 50 today. It is seen that the undergraduate and master programs offered by these departments have increased considerably and diversified in terms of language pairs. In this process, graduates of leading departments took up positions in other universities and pioneered the establishment of new departments. Therefore, on the one hand, knowledge, awareness and experience have been dispersed, and on the other hand, the opportunities for cooperation and interaction between universities and departments have increased. The Bologna Process, on the other hand, reinforces standardization with the transparency and order it brings. This deep-rooted history of translator and interpreter training in Turkey and developments in the field of research bring up a phenomenon that can be defined as the 'Turkish school' in terms of both translation education and translation studies. How this accumulation is reflected in the undergraduate programs in concrete situations and how well the undergraduate programs comply with the frameworks of foreign, especially European origin, regarding the 'conditions of translator and interpreter training' seems to be a research field worth questioning. Based on this main problematic, in this study, the objectives and expectations of the departments that offer translator training in Turkey have been tried to be determined based on the selected sample. In this evaluation, the program outputs declared within the framework of the Bologna Process in the translator training undergraduate programs offered in the departments have been investigated with the content analysis method. Thus, it has been tried to evaluate the compliance of the objectives and expectations in the programs with the framework set forth in Europe regarding translator competencies.
