- Abstract
Baptism can be spoken about in many ways and from a variety of points of view. This article intends to relaunch its ecclesial significance by asking that it be given a more central place within theological reflection. Baptism is the sacrament that inserts a person into the People of God and makes him a member of the Body of Christ. It insures the unity of the Church and disposes all members to live out a concrete expression of ecclesial life. After considering some scriptural perspectives along with the first theological and liturgical tradition concerning the principal images of the Church, the Author examines the baptismal texts of Vatican II and traces a conciliar way of relating the first sacrament with a number of ecclesiological themes. The pastoral conclusion of the article consists in holding to the importance of this vision in order to overcome the contemporary crisis of ecclesial self-understanding.
