- Abstract
The article describes a new approach to securing networked measurements in measurement technology. The increasing networking of measuring devices and test systems via IP-based Ethernet connections raises security concerns for corporate IT. To address these concerns, a holistic approach is presented, which includes strict data flow control and a state-of-the-art unified firewall as a secure application gateway. This firewall enables reliable identification of applications and protects against insidious attack patterns. By filtering and routing data streams based on applications, dedicated networks for measurement technology applications can be made very secure. The use of a unified firewall as a secure application gateway for networking and remote access to measuring devices and test systems is described. The firewall enables user authentication and access via a VPN-on-demand tunnel. By segmenting the network, devices can be isolated and placed in quarantine. The firewall configuration is done via a web interface, allowing for quick and secure setup. A T&M-specific device discovery and management system provides information about available resources in the measurement laboratory.
