- Abstract
Vocabulary studies can enable situation analysis of certain periods of a language or texts. In this research, it is aimed to determine how much vocabulary elements primary school students encounter through listening/watching texts in Turkish lessons, comparatively according to grade levels. In this research, which was carried out in a multi-case qualitative study, the data of all listening/watching texts processed from the first grade to the eighth grade in the 2018-2019 academic year were analyzed through document analysis and evaluated with content analysis. As a result of the research, it was understood that in the 2018-2019 academic year, primary school students encountered a total of 30,778 vocabulary elements, 5.622 of which were different from each other, through listening/watching texts in Turkish lessons. Of the 30,778 vocabulary elements, 750 idioms, 229 reduplications, 4 proverbs, 1327 separately written compound words, 182 fixed expressions, 1404 proper nouns and 479 numerical expressions. It was noted as a remarkable finding that Proverbs were not found in 73 of the 76 texts examined. When the analyzed data are evaluated as a whole, it was concluded that there was no proportional or gradual increase in the vocabulary and word variety ratios of the listening/watching texts from the lower classes to the upper classes.
