- Title
Hot Spinsters: Revisiting Barbara Pym's Virtuous Style.
- Authors
Peer, Jeffrey
- Abstract
Barbara Pym is remembered for her comedy-of-manners novels centered on the lives of morally virtuous, middle-class Anglican ladies in mid-twentieth century Britain, and also for a long publishing hiatus between 1963 and 1977, at the end of which she was rediscovered by publishers and the public. Pym's work has suffered from a legacy of misinterpretation, due both to that publishing hiatus and to her subtle narrative technique. Pym's best known novel, Excellent Women (1952), satirizes hypocritically virtuous attitudes to sex while validating female independence and envisioning alternative social forms that escape from traditional gender stereotypes.
