The essay discusses the effect of World War II on the study of psychiatry in the U.S., arguing that the conflict's total warfare produced psychological casualties which in turned revolutionized the psychiatric profession. The author describes the ways in which the U.S. government's engagement with mental health issues following the war affected the study of the social sciences, especially psychology, sociology, and economics.
