Ticking off the Tick Vectors: Rhipicephalus microplus Fails to Transmit Theileria orientalis.

- Abstract
The article discusses the tick-borne haemoparasite Theileria orientalis, which affects cattle in Australasia, southeast Asia, and the United States. Cattle infected with T. orientalis often display symptoms such as anaemia and weakness. The taxonomy of T. orientalis has been debated, but recent evidence confirms that it comprises 11 distinct allelic types. The tick species Haemaphysalis longicornis is the only confirmed vector for T. orientalis, but other tick species, such as Rhipicephalus microplus, have been suggested to play a role in transmission. However, a recent study found that R. microplus is not a competent vector for T. orientalis. Further research is needed to investigate the potential role of other tick species as vectors for T. orientalis. Understanding tick species as vectors for pathogens is important for improving cattle health outcomes and controlling tick-borne diseases.
