- Abstract
The general public, parents, teachers, and social scientists have long been concerned with the effects of children's radio programs. In the study reported here, the author investigated children's identification with radio characters and their acceptance of values espoused by those characters. He found that success was the most important element in determining whether the personality should be accepted or rejected. One needs to observe the reactions of a typical child to a radio-thriller. The child devours with faithful regularity the precepts of the Lone Ranger, shares the Sky King's perils, and courageously defends troubled planet with the intrepid Space Patrol. One wonders about the effects of these radio programs. If they are limited to such sporadic stimulation of the child's excitement, or to the mere increase in his consumption of certain popular wheat products. Children would probably not choose a successful criminal as a model. This suggests that the model's success determines identification with him as long as his values are not too deviant from those held by the individual.
