- Abstract
The article tells the story of the divorce of writer, editor and church leader Susa Young Gates from husband Jacob Gates in 1878. It offers a look into the troubles in the couple's marriage such as domestic failures, violence, abuse, injustice and trauma. It highlights the preliminaries of the divorce petition on grounds of incompatibility of temper, as well as evidence presented during trial wherein lawyers questioned Susa's fitness as a mother and wife and reflected marital and gender roles.
