- Title
AMELIORATING DEVELOPMENTAL PARADOX BY APPLYING PREVIEWING TO FAMILY THERAPY.

- Abstract
The tendency of developmental change to enhance intimacy while promoting autonomy is a primary paradox encountered by families. When developmental change is perceived to be threatening, families may adopt patterns of interaction which increase intimacy by stifling the advance of maturational skills. An effective means of alleviating this kind of stalemate is through previewing, a process by which parents introduce infants to imminent developmental skills and the implications of these new skills for their relationship. Unlike other paradoxical interventions, previewing is not manipulative and its outcomes are predictable. Previewing may be particularly effective for alleviating the anxiety associated with future outcomes. In addition, previewing surmounts problems caused by the varying developmental stages of family members because it translates paradox into comprehensible behavioral and symbolic terms.
