CLINICAL ASSESSMENT OF A TV CARTOON FAMILY: HOMEWORK TO ENCOURAGE SYSTEMIC THINKING IN COUNSELING STUDENTS.
- Authors
Mathis, Richard D.; Tanner, Zoe
- Abstract
As an experiment in teaching about families in a nonfamily counselor education program, practicum students in a self-directed homework assignment used Olson and associates' Clinical Rating Scale (CRS) to assess "The Simpsons," a TV cartoon family, while a control group received no family training. A significant improvement in systemic thinking about written cases was observed in the treatment group. While this supports Olson's contention that practice with the CRS is an effective family therapy teaching tool, it also suggests that similar self-directed training with clinical scales in general may be an efficient way to help trainees integrate theory and practice.
