- Abstract
This study explored some psychosocial variables that might be involved in the development of a comorbidity between anxiety and depression in the context of high school transition, from a sample of 146 students (average 11.22 years old). In Grade 6, anxious girls presented lower academic achievement than non-anxious girls, while anxiety did not affect boys' performance. In Grade 8, students from the concomitant group experienced more family conflicts than their anxious peers and received marginally less support from their friends. Finally, the presence of family conflicts in anxious Grade 6 students has been marginally associated with the development of comorbidity in Grade 8. These findings raise the importance of offering early interventions with anxious students before the emergence of a concurrent depression disorder.
