- Title
Sermons, Exegesis, and Performance: The Laon Ordo Prophetarum and the Meaning of Advent.
- Authors
LAGUEUX, ROBERT C.
- Abstract
The article examines the exegetical and intertextual meanings of the Advent sermon-based play "Ordo Prophetarum," which is presented in the cathedral town of Laon, France. The author believes that "Ordo Prophetarum" is founded on the understanding of the Advent by the cathedral community which is recorded in a codex compiled in the twelfth century. The play as a Prophets Play genre follows the sermons attributed to the fifth-century Carthagian bishop Quodvulltdeus, and summons various Jewish and pagan prophets.
