- Abstract
This article presents information on various papers related to agriculture, industrial history and economic growth, published in previous issues of various journals. Important new perspectives in evaluating agricultural change and its impact upon the economy are to be found in two articles appearing in tandem in the "Journal of Economic History." One of them is "Agriculture and Economic Growth in England, 1660-1750," by E.L. Jones, and another is "Agricultural Productivity and Economic Growth in England, 1700-1760," by A.H. John. The first seeks to structure innovation, not round the usual polarities of an east-west geographical or enclosure-open field contrast, but according to the differences between heavy and light land. Innovations took better on lighter soils--the light loams, sandy soils, chalk and limestone uplands stimulated by the need to absorb costs created by lower prices. Jones believes that total investment in agriculture rose modestly with falling prices in 1730-1750, a thesis which John supplements by documenting the rise in consumption standards which lower food prices allowed.
