- Abstract
The article focuses on metallic mercury in antiques and the environmental threat it poses. It states that mercury is normally found in thermostats and thermometers, but can also be found in clocks, barometers, mirrors, and lamps. It mentions that as these items age and become more fragile, the mercury can leak and contaminate carpets, floors, furniture, and more. It states that spilled mercury can evaporate and mercury vapor can build up in the air of closed rooms. It comments that the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Register created the Hazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance system in 1990 to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with hazardous substance events.
