- Abstract
This article presents the Patient Page where information on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) disease is given. The disease which is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease involves the progressive loss of motor neurons in the brain and spinal chord. It is a progressive and fatal disease of unknown cause. It is estimated that more than 50 percent of motor neurons are lost before symptoms become apparent. These include muscle wasting in the arms and legs, twitching muscles, trouble swallowing, speaking and breathing and muscle stiffness. Diagnosis is based on examination and electromyograms. Treatment is palliative and includes therapies to assist in daily functioning.
