An "outer subarachnoid space": fact or artifact? A commentary on "Structural characterization of SLYM– a 4th meningeal membrane" fluids and barriers of the CNS (2023) 20:93 by V. Plá et al.

- Abstract
The article discusses the concept of an "outer subarachnoid space" (oSAS) as a potential fourth meningeal membrane in the brain. The author raises concerns about the validity of this concept, pointing out that studying the delicate leptomeningeal membranes is challenging and can lead to displacement and detachment. The author suggests that the division of the subarachnoid space into oSAS and inner subarachnoid space (iSAS) may be the result of unintended artifacts induced by the fixation and decalcification processes. The article concludes by questioning the homologization of the subarachnoid lymphatic-like membrane (SLYM) to a pial layer and suggesting that it may represent a detached reticular/inner arachnoid layer.
