- Title
THE COUNTRY DOCTOR.
- Authors
Wilson, John G.
- Abstract
The article is a reprint of a piece that appeared in the magazine in May 1906. The author discusses the qualifications that are needed to be a country doctor. He also discusses developments in medicine made in the 19th century, such as the use of antiseptics, introduced in the United States by Joseph Lister in 1846, and advances in gallbladder surgery, the treatment of apendicitis and in diseases of the eye. Country doctors should be able to both diagnose ailments and perform surgery if need be. The author states that medicine requires fewer specialists but more thoroughly trained physicians who can perform a variety of tasks well.
