- Authors
Bornstein, D.
- Abstract
The article presents information on provincial painters and local artists in Quattrocento Gortona and the origins of artist Luca Signorelli. Luca Signorelli. Signorelli was born around 1439 and claims that he was a pupil and disciple of artist Piero della Francesca and dates his first independent commissions to 1472, when he worked in the church of San Lorenzo in Arezzo and painted a processional banner for the confraternity of Santa Caterina. Early this century, in what remains the only thoroughly documented biography of the painter, Girolarno Mancini used notarial acts to demonstrate that Signorelli sprang from a well-established Cortonese family, mentioned in the public records of Cortona since the middle of the thirteenth century.
