- Abstract
This article presents information on peripheral arterial diseases. It is characterized by vessel stenosis and occlusion and in symptomatic patients presents with intermittent claudication or with critical limb ischaemia. Atherosclerotic plaque rupture and subsequent thrombus formation is the final common path most frequently leading to arterial occlusion. There has been considerable debate about the potential role of heritable thrombophilic abnormalities in the aetiology and pathogenesis of arterial thrombosis. Inherited natural anticoagulant deficiencies are uncommon and their potential role in the pathogenesis of arterial thrombotic disease has proven difficult to study.
