- Abstract
Periodontal disease is one of the most prevalent oral diseases affecting the supporting tissues of the teeth, gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone. Periodontal diseases are inflammatory disorders; oxidative stress (OxS) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of periodontitis, which can cause damage to genetic biomolecules such as proteins, lipids, and DNA. Increased OxS leads to oxidative damage of DNA with the formation of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) which is excreted in body fluids including gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and saliva. 8-OHdG is used as a standard biomarker of oxidative DNA damage mainly due to its reliable detectability
