- Abstract
The main objective of this paper is to provide a detailed micro-morphology study of leaflets of Pistacia atlantica Desf. subsp. atlantica using recent techniques of microscopy. Comparative analysis of foliar epidermal micromorphology is a base for recent systematic research and provides valuable information for the morphological variability. A comparison of the characters (shape of stomata as well as epidermal cells, stomatal distribution, stomatal type, types of trichomes, presence of wax) has been performed by the mean of light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the leaflets samples are hypoamphystomatic with a high diversity of stomatal types. They have also a various forms of trichomes and an abundance of stomata and glandular trichomes on the abaxial face. On the adaxial face, we found a much reduced number of stomata. They are aligned on both sides along the midrib which is covered by the non-glandular ciliates trichomes. This qualitative and quantitative variability can be interpreted as an adaptations mechanism of species in relation to the environment xericity conditions.
