- Title
When the King Becomes your Personal Enemy: W. T. Stead, King Leopold II, and the Congo Free State.
- Authors
Demoor, Marysa
- Abstract
The article reflects on the remark of "Daily Mail" in its headline on the sinking of the Titanic that English newspaper editor W. T. Stead was the friend of kings. An analysis is offered on Stead's representations of the Congo over two character sketches, one of journalist and explorer H. M. Stanley and the other of King Leopold II in 1903. An account of Stead's animosity for Leopold and its origins in both his conception of Empire and what he saw as Leopold's personal failings is also given.
