- Abstract
This article focuses on the paintings of Yuhanna al-Armani al-Qudsi and Ibrahim al-Nasikh during the eighteenth-century Christian Egypt. A renewal in icon painting took place in Egypt towards the end of Ottoman domination, during the second half of the eighteenth century. Several of the icons produced were signed by Ibrahim al-Nasikh and/or Yuhanna al-Armani al-Qudsi, whose works share a number of distinctive formal traits. They portray clearly outlined figures with almond-shaped eyes against a flat background, defining areas of colour with little modulation and crisp linear details. Certain characteristics help to establish differences in style between the two painters.
