- Abstract
"Making Shabbat: Celebrating and Learning at American Jewish Summer Camps" by Joseph Reimer explores how Shabbat is celebrated and the types of learning that occur at American Jewish summer camps. The author investigates three camps with different approaches to Jewish life and demonstrates that they have striking similarities in their carefully planned programming, positive peer pressure, and guided participation in Shabbat rituals. The book provides a sociological and historical overview of Shabbat celebrations at Jewish summer camps, offers detailed descriptions of the common rhythm of Shabbat at camp, and highlights the role of camps as places of deep Jewish learning. However, the book's limitation is the limited voices of the campers themselves. Overall, "Making Shabbat" is a joy to read, with accessible prose and rich descriptive language.
