- Abstract
Objective: In Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, it was presented that mean thrombocyte volume (MPV) which is a predictor of cardiovascular disease risk had increased. In this study, our purpose was to investigate the difference in MPV and its association with glucose levels in subgroups considering OGTT results. Materials and Method: The cases who had OGTT were divided into subgroups as NGT, IFG, IGT, IFG+IGT and DM according to the guidelines determined by ADA. The difference in MPV values and the correlation between MPV and the glucose levels in subgroups at 0 min., 60 min. and 120 min. was evaluated. Results: When all groups were compared, no difference was determined between any group in terms of MPV values. In correlation analysis for MPV and glucose levels within group, it was observed that there was a correlation between glucose levels and MPV values in the group with IFG at 120 min. (r=0,244, p=0.015) and a poor correlation between glucose levels and MPV values in the group with IGT at 0 min. (r=0.35, p=0.05). Conclusion: Even if MPV looks promising as an indicator of cardiovascular disease risk particularly in diabetic and prediabetic cases, this study is by no means exhaustive and further investigations need to be performed. The correlation in MPV values at 120 min. of OGTT in the group with IFG should be analyzed and it should be considered that it may indicate different steps involved in bone marrow maturation during diabetes development.
