- Abstract
This study incorporates a mixed-methods approach, which includes qualitative research /quantitative research, as well as, empirical analysis. Statistical data was collected from federal and state agencies, hospitals, and other medical agencies. The purpose of this research study is to assert that mandated, systematic reporting of asthma occurrences among disproportionately impacted communities could be a means towards eliminating these occurrences and directly and positively impact the socio-economic status of individuals with asthma as well as the state of Mississippi, as a whole. Sources will be agencies within the state of Mississippi that are responsible for tracking and reporting asthma occurrences, asthma reports tracked by private physicians and statistical data reports from hospital emergency rooms. Statistics from federal agencies will also be included to support the hypothesis of this study. The collection of this data will be through the use of faceto-face and telephone interviews, qualitative research, and empirical analysis. This study will be conducted within the state of Mississippi. Conclusively, this study finds that mandated reporting of diseases has been effective, as such one of the main recommendations of this study is to mandate consistent, systematic reporting of asthma cases with the state of Mississippi.
