- Abstract
The obstacles to growth and performance of small businesses may differ, depending on the nature and characteristic of a particular sector of economic activity. The objective of this study was to analyze the performance and the obstacles to growth and performance faced by small hospitality businesses in Curitiba, in the State of Paraná. Data were collected through semi-structuralized personal interviews with the owners/managers of the hotels. The sampling criterion was accessibility or adhesion. Forty-three interviews were carried out. Most of the interviewees stated that business performance was hindered by the entry of large hotel chains in Curitiba, with lower tariffs, forcing them to reduce their own tariffs, despite increasing costs. The main obstacles faced by the small hotels were high taxes, incompatible with the size of these hotels, the entry of hotel chains to the local market, lack of resources to invest in the hotel, lack of physical space, and difficulties with employees.
