- Abstract
Faced with increasing competition from other cultural offers, cultural institutions are forming alliances and organizing joint actions in order to connect arts sites in a way that is appealing to visitors. Lille MAP is a fledgling arts network in the region surrounding Lille, France, launched in 2009 and involving five cultural institutions - four museums with an eclectic heritage (fine arts, modern and contemporary arts, decorative arts, ceramics and textiles) and one audiovisual arts centre. A study of Lille MAP reveals four conditions behind the success of such a network. First, the network must develop a long-term vision. Second, it must operate in a protective political environment promoting culture in general. Third, each member of the network must retain its individual identity while benefiting from its complementarities with the others. Finally, the network must ensure its long-term survival by facing the challenges that arise and implementing new initiatives on a regular basis.
