- Title
A two-for-one in tomato nutritional enhancement.

- Abstract
The article reports that plant antioxidant phytonutrients produced by the terpenoid and phenylpropanoid pathways have been increased simultaneously for the first time, creating an extra-nutritious tomato. The DET1 transcription factor was first identified in Arabidopsis thaliana as a negative regulator of photomorphogenic responses; the det1 mutant grows in the dark as though it were exposed to light. Notably, the percentage increase in chlorogenic acid levels in the tomato fruit was significantly higher than that previously reported in tomato leaves after upregulation of a single rate-determining pathway enzyme. Finally, the transformation construct could be equipped with host plant-specific terminator and border sequences so that the DNA sequence of the resulting plant would derive only from tomato.
