- Abstract
Restoring and maintaining sinus rhythm (SR) is one of the most important considerations with regard to AF management.[7] Here, doxapram successfully cardioverted AF episodes and significantly reduced AF burden following a continuous 14-day treatment in AF pigs. This editorial refers to 'Treatment of atrial fibrillation with doxapram: TASK-1 potassium channel inhibition as a novel pharmacological strategy' by Wiedmann I et al i . https://10.1093/cvr/cvab177 Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia and is highly associated with increased morbidity and mortality. It is well established in experimental model systems that enhanced repolarizing K SP + sp currents reflect AF-associated electrical remodelling that contributes to AF maintenance and progression.[1] Considering the experimental setting where the antiarrhythmic therapy was started simultaneously with AF induction, one may speculate that early doxapram treatment may prevent AF promotion.
