- Abstract
Objective: Medpor is a microporous high density polyethylene implant that has been used as a framework in pinna construction. However, it has the risk of extrusion. The objective of this study is to review the outcome of pinnaplasty using Medpor in our setting. Design: Retrospective case review. Materials and methods: All cases of pinnaplasty using Medpor implant performed in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC) from the year 2000 until 2010 were reviewed. Intra operative and follow up reviews were analysed to study the outcome. Results: There were 21 cases of pinnaplasty but only outcome of fourteen cases with complete data were analysed. The age at the time of surgery ranges from 8 to 52 years old. Twelve cases underwent pinnaplasty on the right, 2 on the left. All surgeries were done by the same otology team. Pinnaplasty was done in two stages. Aesthetically, six cases were considered as good outcome, seven cases were satisfactory and one had early failure and was explanted. Overall there were seven cases requiring two to four times of refashioning due to partial exposure of Medpor. Three implants had to be removed at 3, 7 and 10 years respectively due to major extrusion. Conclusion: Medpor implant is a reasonable alternative as a framework in pinnaplasty. However, it may require refashioning of the implant postoperatively and the long term outcome is guarded.
