- Abstract
Introduction: Wegener's granulomatosis is an idiopathic autoimmune disease. It rarely occurs in non-Caucasians. Ear discharge as initial presentation could be mistaken as ordinary otitis media. Methods: Clinical report. Result: We report a girl with history of bilateral ear discharge followed by sudden profound hearing loss after the discharge stopped. Clinical examination revealed healed tympanic membranes and destruction of left lateral nasal wall. Diagnosis was made based on nasal biopsy and the hearing level improved after the treatment with corticosteroids and cyclophosphamide. Conclusion: Wegener's granulomatosis is rare among non-Caucasian. A hearing loss that is not correlated with ear findings must alert the clinician of other diagnosis rather than simple otitis media. Early intervention could save the patient's hearing.
