- Abstract
Objective: To investigate factors related to depression among caregivers of patients with dementia. Design: Cross sectional study. Subjects and method: The data includes 55 pairs of family caregivers and outpatients with dementia, who attended the psychiatric dispensary of Sapporo Medical University Hospital from 2006 to 2007, in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan. Caregivers answered a self-administered questionnaire about various factors that may affect their care-burden. Results: 25(45.5%) of the 55 caregivers were depressed. Compared with non-depressed caregivers, they were older and more likely to have chronic diseases under treatment, and spent more time on watching their patients, and used more money for the patients. Compared with patients of non-depressed caregivers, patients of depressed caregivers had more behavioral problems and more of them used day-time respite care. Conclusion: We should care for not only patients with dementia but also their family caregivers, especially when patients have more behavioral disturbances.
