- Abstract
The article discusses the evolutionary processes that might underlie the phenomenon of shared institutions of justice. Evolutionary processes can produce cognitive and behavioral predispositions that assist individuals solve commonly encountered problems in ancestral environments. The evidence from animal behavior studies, brain science, and child development studies are examined. The article also looks at an alternative explanation that shared institutions of justice might occur through general social learning due to particular intuitions of justice offer efficient norms for group functioning.
