- Abstract
The article discusses the work of fur trader and mountain man Jean-Baptiste Charbonneau along the southern trails of the U.S. and Mexico during the onset of the Mexican-American War. He largely worked as a guide for the forces of U.S. General Stephen Watts Kearny along the Santa Fe Trail. The author begins by charting Charbonneau's travels throughout the Western U.S. Kearny's force traveled through present-day New Mexico, Arizona, and California under the guidance of Charbonneau. There is a monument dedicated to Charbonneau in Donner, Oregon.
