- Title
Upland Geopolitics: Postwar Laos and the Global Land Rush.
- Authors
Lentz, Christian C.
- Abstract
The article discusses the phenomenon of the "global land grab" that occurred during the Great Recession in 2008, where transnational corporations and investors purchased large amounts of land in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. The author focuses on the case of northern Laos, where rubber estates have transformed the region. The article challenges the narrative that explains land deals in terms of corrupt local elites and weak states, instead emphasizing the role of the Lao state in managing enclosures. The author also explores the historical context and theoretical concepts related to the agrarian question and governmentality. Overall, the article provides valuable insights into the impact of land acquisitions on rural communities and the global south.
