- Title
The physical chemistry of self/non-self: jigsaws, transplants and fetuses.
- Authors
Bangham, Alec
- Abstract
This essay argues that human beings emit volatile organic compounds (VOC) which helps identify an individual, as well as links to and neutralizes Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC). It discusses the author's belief that the properties of VOC can be used to reduce immune response to transplanted organs, which is exemplified by the presence of the fetus. The author also shares his studies on the concentration and nature of the embedded surface ions.
