- Abstract
The article provides information on the history of plastic daguerreotype case for photography in the U.S. In 1853, the so-called Union Cases, a plastic daguerreotype case, were produced in a variety of designs, which are commonly referred as hard rubber or gutta percha. On October 3, 1854, daguerreotypist Samuel Peck was granted U.S. Patent 11,758 for his "Manufacture of Daguerreotype Cases," which composed of gum shellac and woody fibers or other suitable fibrous material dyed to the color. On October 14, 1856, daguerreotypist Alfred P. Critchlow was granted U.S. Patent 15,915 for an improvement on plastic daguerreotype case.
