- Abstract
The article discusses representations of humility before God in early modern Lutheran religious art such as icons. The views of the German founder of Lutheranism Martin Luther on the alleged misuse of religious images and art are presented, the impact of the Reformation on religious art is described, and information is offered on the position of sepulchral monuments within Lutheranism. The religious portraits and monuments of noble families including the von Schleinitzes are analyzed along with the roles of patrons in financing Lutheran church buildings.
