- Title
Evidence of Maximum Age of the Serpent Mound Impact Event from Shatter Cones.
- Authors
MILAM, KEITH A.; GABRESKI, CHAD; BARANOSKI, MARK; MILLER, DAVID W.
- Abstract
The article discusses the results of a study that investigated the Serpent Mound impact crater, measuring seven to eight kilometers in diameter, located in the sedimentary rock in southwestern Ohio. The period of occurrence of the impact event is discussed based on geologic mapping. It explains how the shock metamorphism of a rock may provide a definitive mean to restrain the age of an impact event. It concludes that shatter-coned fragments represent the Upper Devonian-Lower Mississippian shale.
