- Title
HIV TESTING PATTERNS AND UNRECOGNIZED HIV INFECTION AMONG YOUNG ASIAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER MEN WHO HAVE SEX WITH MEN IN SAN FRANCISCO.
- Abstract
The article presents information on the HIV testing patterns and unrecognized HIV infection among young Asian and Pacific Islander men who have sex with men (API MSM). Delayed HIV testing among infected persons is related to advancement in disease, higher health care costs, and higher likelihood of HIV transmission to others. There are almost 75% of APIMSM living with HIV in the U.S. and yet most of them have never been tested for HIV. Due to the morbidity associated with delayed testing, a study was conducted in which interviews and serological testing for HIV antibodies among 495 APIMSM was taken. The study also assessed various sociodemographic measures including race, ethnicity, age, highest level of education, employment, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Comparison was made between those who reported prior HIV testing to those who had never tested on these sociodemographic measures. This was done in order to determine the correlation between the two. The study revealed that three fourth of the sample of APIMSM reported having tested for HIV.
