- Abstract
With the invention of social media, whole community of the world has integrated into a globalized virtual community. This virtual community is also increasing in Pakistan. The present study has been conducted to find the difference of socialization of students in using social media of different faculties, courses and academic years, to identify the difference of purposes of students in using social media of different faculties, courses and academic years and to expose the difference of academic use of social media of students of different faculties, courses and academic years. The study was quantitative in nature and was delimited to undergraduate and post graduate students of 12 faculties of University of the Punjab, Lahore. Survey research method was used to collect data through questionnaire which was adopted with minor modifications. Stratified random sampling with equal allocation technique was used to collect data. Fifty students from each faculty were selected through self-administered survey. The data was analyzed through SPSS. The present study concluded that 100% students of University of the Punjab have access to internet and their favorite social media is Facebook. The results of the study concluded that in using social media pure sciences students socialize minimum with their course teachers as compared to arts and humanities students and therefore have significant difference. After pure sciences students, social sciences students also socialize minimum with their course teachers as compared to arts and humanities students and it has also a significant difference. Pure sciences students socialize minimum with people far away as compared to social sciences students and have significant difference. Under graduate and graduate students don't socialize with strangers as compared to postgraduate students and have significant difference in socialization using social media. Study revealed that pure sciences students are less interested in making friends as compared to arts and humanities students and have significant difference. Students of pure sciences arc less interested in writing blogs as compared to social sciences and arts and humanities students. Results of the study revealed that undergraduate students and postgraduate student use minimum social media for making friends and have significant difference with graduate students. Postgraduate students and graduate students use minimum social media for information sharing with friends and for academic purposes and have significant difference with other course students. Graduate students use minimum social media for academic purposes as compared to under and postgraduate students, therefore it has significant difference. Results revealed that students of 1st year students are less interested in looking for job using social media and have significant difference with other 2nd and 3,d year students. Results of the study found that students of all faculties, all courses and all academic years have no difference in using social media for academic purposes and having an opinion to use social media as an academic tool. The present study will assist the educationists, policy makers and software developers to have better understandings on the use of social media by the students of University of the Punjab, Lahore.
