The Plays of Art Are for a Playful Art: History, Puzzles, and Play in Verdi's "Falstaff."
- Authors
Basini, Laura
- Abstract
A literary criticism is presented which examines some of the prominent works of Italian operatic composer Giuseppe Verdi. In this article, the author takes a different approach in examining the play "Falstaff" following the cues of the non-operatic styles mentioned to step outside the opera house and into the wider world of Verdi's Italy. The first, crucial point is that Falstaff was composed after the Unification of Italy. Throughout the early nineteenth century, Italy had existed not as a unified country but as a patchwork of many small Italian city-states.
