Comprehending, Composing, and Celebrating Graphic Poetry.
- Authors
Calo, Kristine M.
- Abstract
The article discusses children's interest in graphic poetry and the use of graphic poetry to instruct students in comprehension and composition. The author examines the use of visual clues and images in graphic poetry, which she says help motivate students to read and analyze poetry, as well as compose poetry themselves. She explores excerpts from graphic poetry versions of the poems "Paul Revere's Ride" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughes. The article then provides examples of how teachers can teach students about poetry using graphic poetry, including the use of reading response, questioning the poet, and creating opportunities for students to share their own graphic poetry.
